Empowering Women in Climate-Smart Agriculture Project

Strengthening digital and climate-smart agriculture capacities of women producers in Gaziantep, Şanlıurfa and Mardin.

Planned Gaziantep, Şanlıurfa, Mardin

Agriculture is changing rapidly. Climate change, increasing pressure on water resources, rising production costs and digitalisation are making everyday farming decisions more complex. In this environment, strengthening women farmers’ access to knowledge, technology and decision-making is becoming increasingly important.

With this perspective, the Empowering Women in Climate-Smart Agriculture Project has been designed for implementation in Gaziantep, Şanlıurfa and Mardin.

The project was planned and developed by Dr. Korkut Gökhan KURTAR, President of the International Center for Climate-Smart Agriculture Technologies Studies Association. The implementing organization of the project will be the Anatolian Women Farmers Association, chaired by Mrs. Süreyya Ümran ALINAK, whose visionary approach to smart agricultural technologies and the empowerment of women farmers stands out.

The development of the project has also been strengthened by the firm commitment of Sabiha GÜL, President of the International Development, Society and Thought Association, to supporting women and women producers, together with the active and comprehensive support of the Department of Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development of Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality.

Three Provinces, One Shared Goal

The project will be implemented in Gaziantep, Şanlıurfa and Mardin, three important agricultural provinces where climate pressures, water management and the need for more efficient use of agricultural resources are becoming increasingly significant.

  • Gaziantep: Digital observation, crop monitoring and access to agricultural technology services in pistachio, pepper and other production systems.
  • Şanlıurfa: Water-use efficiency, irrigation decisions, soil moisture and energy use in cotton, maize and wheat production.
  • Mardin: Climate-smart agricultural practices, digital skills, efficient resource use and improved access to appropriate digital agricultural services.

The project aims to reach 150 pioneer producers, with particular emphasis on women farmers and women actively involved in agricultural production.

Training and Implementation Approach

Workshops will address practical issues such as water-use efficiency, irrigation decisions, soil moisture, sensors, satellite imagery, digital observation and women’s participation in agricultural decision-making.

Training sessions will include digital literacy, safe smartphone use, an introduction to climate-smart agriculture, basic farm records, sensor-supported irrigation, interpretation of satellite imagery and crop monitoring.

The purpose is not to turn participants into technical specialists, but to help women farmers understand data, ask the right questions and choose technologies and services that fit their own production conditions.

Expected Impact

Through its activities in Gaziantep, Şanlıurfa and Mardin, the Empowering Women in Climate-Smart Agriculture Project aims to strengthen women’s access to knowledge and technology while contributing to climate resilience, more efficient use of agricultural resources, sustainable production and stronger rural communities.
